Hiring a professional resume writer is one of the smartest moves you can make for your career. Today’s job market is competitive and constantly evolving, and hiring managers often spend just 6–7 seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to keep reading. A well-written, targeted resume can make the difference between getting an interview or getting passed over.

But working with a professional is a two-way street. As your resume writer, I’m here to help you succeed — and our collaboration will be most effective when we’re both aligned. Think of this process as if you are working with a personal trainer: Your success depends on both expert guidance and active participation. The more we collaborate, the better your results. To set you up for success, here are 10+ practical tips to help us create a resume that’s not just good but interview winning as well.

1. Communicate Clearly

I promise to communicate clearly and consistently. In return, I ask that you respond to messages in a timely way and be transparent about your work history, education, and accomplishments. I rely on accurate and complete information to build your resume.

As outlined in my Service Agreement, I won’t include false information … and you shouldn’t either. Your resume is a reflection of your integrity and personal brand.

2. Have a Clear Career Target

One of the most common missteps I see is clients wanting a “general resume.” Unfortunately, this never works. I am a professional resume writer, who writes stronger resumes when I know your goal — whether that’s for a Marketing Coordinator, an IT Project Manager, or an Operations Supervisor.

A targeted resume enables us to align your skills and achievements with job-specific keywords.

Example: If you’re shifting from Retail Sales to Inside Sales, we’ll highlight transferable skills like CRM software usage, negotiations, and customer relationship building.

3. Meet Your Deadlines

To keep your project on track, please aim to meet deadlines when providing information to me or reviewing drafts. If your timeline changes — such as spotting a “dream job” you want to apply for next week — just let me know. I’ll do my best to support you with quick turnarounds.

4. Invest in Yourself

Your resume is just one part of your career toolkit. I may recommend upgrades to your LinkedIn profile, interview coaching, or even a customized tapping into the hidden job market campaign. Remember: Investing 2–3% of your income into your career (as noted by Forbes) often brings high returns in the form of job offers, promotions, and/or higher salaries.

5. Trust the Process — and the Professional

Well-meaning friends and relatives may offer resume advice, but this can cause confusion. If you’ve hired me, rely on my guidance. I’m trained and credentialed to write resumes that are keyword optimized, ATS friendly, and focused on results.

A lot of misinformation exists online (and from AI tools) about “perfect” resume formats. Some say never go past one page — others say two is fine. The truth depends on your experience, industry, and job goals

6. Your Resume is a Marketing Tool, Not a Biography

Think of your resume as a brochure, not a timeline. I won’t include every job you’ve ever had — especially if some roles aren’t relevant. Instead, we’ll focus on your most compelling and aligned accomplishments.

Example: If you worked at a call centre five years ago but now manage digital projects, we may minimize or omit the earlier role in favor of stronger, more recent experience.

Your resume should be focused, forward-looking, and relevant to your target role.

7. Don’t Lend Out Your Resume

Your resume is tailored just for you — your story, your strengths, your goals. Sharing your format or wording with someone else can dilute its power and potentially harm your brand.

If someone admires your resume, refer them to me. I’ll create something equally effective for their unique background.

8. If You’re Not Getting Results, Let’s Talk

If your resume isn’t landing interviews, that’s not a failure — it’s a signal. Reach out, and we can review the strategy, revise the document, or discuss your job search tactics.

Many clients have seen success after minor adjustments. And if you are landing interviews and job offers, I’d love to hear about that, too! Your testimonials and referrals are deeply appreciated and help others make the same smart decision you did.

9. Keep Me Posted

Even after your resume is complete, I’m still part of your career journey. Let me know when you land the job. Let’s celebrate your success together!

10. Update Your Resume After 90 Days

Once you’ve settled into your new role, circle back and let’s add your latest achievements. Don’t wait until you’re urgently job-hunting again — keep your resume “warm” so you’re ready for promotions, new opportunities, or side ventures.

I recommend keeping a simple career accomplishments journal to log key wins and milestones as they happen.

Bonus: Pro Tips for Job Search Success

Here are a couple of often-overlooked extras that can boost your results:

  • Use the right file name. Don’t save your resume as “Final Resume.docx.” Instead, try FirstLast_Resume_TargetRole_2025.pdf to look polished and organized.
  • Stick with PDF unless told otherwise. Unless a job posting specifically asks for Word format, always send a PDF to preserve formatting.
  • Tailor your cover letter. If you need help with this, ask! A tailored cover letter increases your chances of being noticed by 50% or more.
