Although scam activity has existed for years in the resume-writing community, it exploded during COVID. Here is a checklist you can use to determine if a resume writing service is worth the investment (or not).
1) Does the resume service’s website have an “About” or a “Qualifications” page that contains the name(s) and expertise of their writer(s?)? If not, run – especially if they use such tired wording as “We are a results-driven team with over 20 years of experience.”
2) Is the resume writer certified? Some say they are when – in fact – they are not. If they are willing to lie to you about their credentials, you can only imagine how severely they will butcher your resume – GUARANTEED!
To verify if a resume writer is certified, go to any of the following resume-writing organizations to confirm that the writer is indeed telling the truth:
- the Professional Association of Resume Writers & Career Coaches. Click on “Find a Professional”
- Career Directors International. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on “Find a Resume Writer or Career Coach”
- Career Professionals of Canada. Go to “About” and click on “Member Directory”
- The National Resume Writers Association. Click on “Search for a Writer”

3) Do they belong to any of the above-mentioned career organizations? If so, their names will appear on said sites if their membership is current. If they don’t belong to at least 1 of these associations, immediately look for someone else.
4) Will they provide samples of their work upon request? If no, then what are they hiding? (Marian is happy to share her work in a 30-minute Zoom consultation call)
5) Does their website contain a phone number – ideally not only a toll-free number – that you can contact if you have any questions?
6) Do they make outlandish promises that sound too good to be true? An example: “We guarantee that you will receive a job in 30 days or less, or we will refund your money.”
